New Zealand's net migration increased in June from a year ago, figures from Statistics New Zealand showed Friday.

In the year to June 30, net migration reached a new record high of 72,305, up from 69,090 in the same period of 2016.

Migrant arrivals numbered 131,400 and migrant departures totaled 59,100 in June.

"Annual net migration has been steadily increasing since late 2012 when we had more departures than arrivals," population statistics senior manager, Peter Dolan, said.

"Over the past three years, annual net migration has been consistently hitting record levels due to an increasing number of non-New Zealand citizen arrivals."

Visitor arrivals to the country grew 10.0 percent from June last year to 3.6 million. Overseas trips by New Zealand residents climbed by 22,400 to 2.6 million.
