David Bowie Picture Disc Celebrating 'Alabama Song' Due In February

A 7" vinyl to be released in early 2020 is going to feature a previously unreleased recording of late rock icon David Bowie's "Alabama Song."

The 40th anniversary 7" picture-disk will arrive on February 14, 2020, while the original was released on February 15, 1980.

Bowie, who was a longtime fan of the German poet Bertolt Brecht, was inspired to record the song after coming across a Brecht poem of the same name, set to music by Kurt Weill in 1927 for a "scenic cantata" dubbed "The Little Mahagony."

The studio version was recorded on July 2, 1978, at Tony Visconti's Good Earth Studios in Soho, London.

Also included on the disc is a brand-new version of "Joe The Lion" from Bowie's 1977 hit album, Heroes.
