Former Silver Bullet Band saxophonist Alto Reed died Wednesday at the age of 72 after a battle with advanced stage of colon cancer.

He is survived by his children Chelsea Reed Radler and Victoria Reed, his partner Christiana Van Ryn and ex-wife Monica Reed.

A long-time member of Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, Reed's career dates back to 1972.

The news of his death was broken by Silver Bullet Band founder Bob Seger on Twitter.

In a tribute posted on Facebook, Seger said, "He was amazing.
He could play just about anything".

"He was funky, could scat, and play tenor sax and alto sax at the same time," he added.

An official statement by Seger and Reed's daughters said, "Reed led an extraordinary life, marked by passion, determination, and dreams come true - an action-packed adventure filled top to bottom with love, magic, dear friends, family, and unspeakable joys. The stuff of legends, really."

"His skillfulness, dedication and brilliance as an artist and performer made him a hero not only to us, but to thousands of others - if not millions," according to Chelsea and Victoria.
