The Weeknd has promised to donate $1 million to the UN World Food Program engaged in relief efforts for Ethiopians caught up in the conflict between the government in Addis Ababa and the Tigray region.
The five-month-old conflict has reportedly claimed the lives of thousands of civilians, while many others were subjected to rape and abuse.
"My heart breaks for my people of Ethiopia as innocent civilians ranging from small children to the elderly are being senselessly murdered and entire villages are being displaced out of fear and destruction," The Weeknd wrote on social media.
"I will be donating $1 million to provide 2 million meals through the United Nations World Food Program and encourage those who can to please give as well," added the R&B singer, who was born to Ethiopian parents who immigrated to Canada.
