Anita Pointer, a co-founder of the Grammy-winning Pointer Sisters, has passed away.
The 74-year-old singer-songwriter, who has been fighting cancer, died at her Beverley Hills home in Los Angeles, surrounded by her family, on Saturday.
"While we are deeply saddened by the loss of Anita, we are comforted in knowing she is now with her daughter, Jada and her sisters June & Bonnie and at peace. Heaven is a more loving beautiful place with Anita there. She was the one that kept all of us close and together for so long. Her love of our family will live on in each of us," reads a statement from her family."
The statement asked that the family's privacy be respected "during this period of grief and loss."
In 1969 Anita and her sisters Bonnie, June and Ruth formed the Pointer Sisters.
The all-lady quartet rose to fame with hit songs such as "Jump (For My Love)" and "Fire" and their self-titled album released in 1973. The album's pop and R&B breakout hit "Yes We Can Can" was certified gold.
The Pointer Sisters' hit song "Fairytale" won a Grammy award two years later.
It was Anita who raised her granddaughter Roxie McKain Pointer after her only daughter Jada died of cancer in 2003.
