Steady Start Seen For Hong Kong Stock Market

The Hong Kong stock market has finished lower in back-to-back sessions, slumping more than 700 points or 3 percent along the way. The Hang Seng Index now rests just above the 25,675 point plateau although it may halt its slide on Tuesday.

The global forecast for the Asian markets is soft on ongoing pessimism over the conflict in the Middle East and concerns over the outlook for interest rates. The European markets were up and the U.S. bourses were mixed and the Asian markets figure to split the difference.

The European Central Bank became the first major central bank to move in response to the rising inflationary pressures in the backdrop of the conflict in the Middle East. In North America, the U.S. inflation and trade data as well as Canada’s central bank decision gained attention. The Chinese trade data was the main news in Asia.
