FibroBiologics, Inc. (FBLG) announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued Patent No. 12,721,866 covering the therapeutic use of fibroblasts and fibroblast-derived materials for wound healing.
The newly granted patent protects methods of accelerating wound repair through topical administration of 3D spheroids and fibroblast-derived compositions, including extracellular vesicles, exosomes, and cell fragments.
chronic and nonhealing wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, bedsores, and burn injuries represent a major unmet medical need, often impairing quality of life and placing a heavy burden on healthcare systems.
Preclinical studies cited in the patent showed that wounds treated with fibroblast spheroids healed significantly faster than controls, including in diabetic models where healing is typically difficult.
CEO Pete O'Heeron stated that wound care remains one of the largest unmet needs in medicine, and emphasized that this patent strengthens FibroBiologics's leadership in fibroblast-based therapies. He noted that the technology could potentially change the standard of care for millions of patients suffering from chronic wounds.
FBLG has traded between $0.62 and $12.40 over the past year. The stock is currently trading at $1.76, down 9.74%.
