1986 - Peter Gabriel's ‘So’ Released

Peter Gabriel released his fifth studio album, “So,” on May 19, 1986. “So” followed Gabriel’s 1985 soundtrack for the film “Birdy” and marked his second collaboration with producer Daniel Lanois.

Though Gabriel had already risen to international fame for his work with Genesis, “So” brought him to a new level of solo fame. The album included several of his biggest tracks including “Red Rain” and “Big Time” along with his signature hits “Sledgehammer” and “In Your Eyes.”

“So” reached as high as number two on the Billboard 200 chart and topped the charts in the U.K. At the time, the album was just beaten out of the top position in the U.S. by the smash hit soundtrack to the film “Top Gun.”
