1957 - Buddy Holly Releases ‘That'll Be The Day’

Buddy Holly released his signature hit single “That’ll Be The Day” on May 27, 1957. The track was included on Buddy’s 1958 album of the same name and was co-written with Jerry Allison, with whom Holly also penned “Peggy Sue.”

Holly and Allison penned that track together after a trip to the movies to see John Wayne’s “The Searchers.” After hearing him use the phrase “that’ll be the day,” they adapted the line into a lyric. At this time, Holly had signed with Decca Records but struggled with the label, which was pushing him to adopt more of a country sound.

In February of 1957, Holly and his band traveled to Clovis, New Mexico, where he connected with a producer named Norman Petty. Petty encouraged them to explore their budding rock sound. It was in these sessions that they tracked “That’ll Be They Day.”

The song went on to top the Billboard “Best Seller” chart in 1957 and also hit number two on the R&B singles chart.
