Alicia Keys Reaches Number One With "Fallin'' 11 Years Ago

1962 - Ringo Makes Beatles Debut
1962 - Ringo Makes Beatles Debut

The Beatles as the world would soon come to know them - John, Paul, George and Ringo - performed their first gig together on August 18, 1962, at a horticultural society in Birkenhead, England.

This was Ringo Starr's first performance as an official member of the band, replacing booted drummer Pete Best. Picked more for personality reasons than for his likely creative input, Ringo would remain a beloved Beatles fixture through the group's run as the most popular band in the world. This, despite his limited songwriting and his diminished role once the band stopped touring in 1966.

Once, when asked if Starr was the best drummer in the world, John Lennon joked, “He’s not even the best drummer in the Beatles!”
