The Supremes released their smash hit single “Stop in the Name of Love” on February 8, 1965. The track became the Motown stars’ fourth consecutive hit and was penned by the legendary writing team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Edward Holland Junior.

Recording on the track began on January 5 of that year and it rose to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart on March 21. The trio’s success came at a time of personal turmoil for the trio, however, as Diana Ross rose to the forefront as the group’s star. They followed their fourth hit with the first Motown Revue tour in Europe.

“We weren’t even talking to one another by the time we got to Europe. The pace of everything had gotten to us, I think. It was hard work and we were so young it sort of surprised us,” Ross says in the biography “Diana” by J. Randy Taraborelli.
