The Ohio Players Reach Number One With 'Fire' 38 Years Ago

1971 - Neil Young's 'Heart Of Gold' Recorded
1971 - Neil Young's 'Heart Of Gold' Recorded

Neil Young recorded "Heart Of Gold," his only solo number one single, on February 8, 1971.

The session took place at Quadrafonic Studios in Nashville, Tennessee. It was part of the recording process for Young's classic LP "Harvest," which would include "Old Man" and "The Needle and the Damage Done," as well as "Heart of Gold."

Young had come to Nashville in order to appear on the "Johnny Cash Show" and went into the studio after the appearance. Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor, who appeared with Young on the program, accompanied him to the studio and provided background vocals for "Heart of Gold” and "Old Man."

"Harvest" would be released the following year. In March 1972, "Heart Of Gold" would reach the top of the singles charts.
