Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman John Fogerty was born in Berkeley, California, on May 28, 1945. Fogerty began his musical journey with his brother Tom Fogerty in the late 1950s in the band Tommy Fogerty and the Blue Velvets. They signed their first record deal with Fantasy Records in 1965 and changed their name to the Golliwogs. After John did a stint in the Army Reserves in 1966 and 1967, the band changed their name again, this time to Creedence Clearwater Revival. CCR released their debut self-titled album in 1968, spawning their early singles “I Put A Spell on You” and “Suzie Q.” With John as the band’s main songwriter, they would go on to create such classics as “Born On The Bayou,” “Fortunate Son” and “Bad Moon Rising.”John Fogerty split from CCR in 1972 due creative and personal differences with his band mates. After taking an extended period of time off from the music business, Fogerty returned to the stage in 1984. Though he was initially hesitant to play Creedence material, he eventually agreed to do so at the request of fans. “Gradually I realized that these were not just my songs anymore," he said in an interview for the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
