Whitney Houston hit the top of the Billboard 200 chart with her sophomore effort “Whitney” on June 27, 1987. The album followed Houston’s self-titled 1985 and includes her signature track "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me).”

When “Whitney” took the top spot, it succeeded U2’s smash hit album “The Joshua Tree.” Houston held on at number one for an impressive eleven weeks before she succumbed to the soundtrack from the Richie Valens’ biopic “La Bamba.”

"I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)” also hit the top spot on the Hot 100 chart and producer Narada Michael Walden says he nearly passed on the track when he heard the first demos.

“I thought it was too country and western. It reminded me of a rodeo song with Olivia Newton-John singing. I’d wake up in the morning thinking about it . . . (wondering) what am I gonna do with this dang song? So we just jumped in the water . . . and lo and behold a magic record was born,” he told Billboard.
