1968 - Elvis Returns To Stage For Comeback Special

Elvis Presley appeared at the NBC studios in Burbank, Californi,a for the first of two informal comeback sets on June 27, 1968. The performances featured Presley flanked by two members of his original band and were later released as a double album called “Memories: The '68 Comeback Special” in 1998.

The first set kicked off at around 6 p.m. and Elvis started off with a rendition of “Are You Lonesome Tonight.” The seemingly relaxed King of Rock is heard on the recording joking with his band. After one bandmate laughs, Elvis is heard saying: “Dead serious, boy.”

The performance gave Presley’s his first live audience outside of movie scenes in nearly seven years and reportedly encouraged by producers to joke with his band to calm his nerves. The performance was also filmed for release as a television special titled “Singer Presents Elvis Presley.”

The 1998 collection from the session includes his iconic hits “Heartbreak Hotel,” “All Shook Up” and “Hound Dog.”
