Old Blue Eyes Hit #1 With 'Strangers In The Night' 44 Years Ago

Foreigner released their fourth studio album “4” on July 2, 1981. The album yielded a handful of radio hits, including "Urgent", "Waiting for a Girl Like You," and "Juke Box Hero." The LP rose to the top of the Billboard 200 chart – the first (and only) Foreigner release to do so.

The album initially hit number one in the U.S. on August 22, 1981, bumping "Precious Time" by Pat Benatar out of the top position. It held the top spot until September 4 when "Bella Donna" by Stevie Nicks took over. Foreigner went on to hit the top of the chart with “4” one more time in 1981 and then for a third time in 1982.

It would be another three years before the band would release their fifth studio album “Agent Provocateur.” While speaking with Billboard, however, the band’s Mick Jones says the long delay wasn’t a product of laziness.

“First we were recovering from the recording and world tour four ‘Four,’ which represented two and half years’ solid work. And then there were one or two complications,” he says adding that they replaced producer Trevor Horn after several months of working together.
