TLC Reaches #1 With 'Waterfalls' 16 Years Ago

1972 - Bill Withers Hits #1 With ‘Lean On Me’
1972 - Bill Withers Hits #1 With ‘Lean On Me’

Bill Withers hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his single “Lean On Me” on July 8, 1972. The track was released as a single from Wither’s 1972 album “Still Bill,” which also includes his signature hit “Use Me.”

“Lean On Me” took over at the top spot from Neil Diamond’s hit “Song Sung Blue” and held on at number one for the next three weeks. It eventually lost the top spot to Gilbert O’Sullivan’s single "Alone Again (Naturally).”

The track was one of Withers’ final two singles with his original label, Sussex Records. He eventually became embroiled in a legal battle with the company. While speaking with the Los Angeles Times in 1975, Withers admitted that the lawsuit took a toll on his creativity:

“This kind of legal hassle, if it drags on, can really stop you musically . . . I have a very hard time being creative when I’m worried about business problems,” he explained.
