1969 - Marianne Faithfull Attempts Suicide

Singer Marianne Faithfull attempted to take her own life while on the set of the film “Ned Kelly” in Australia with her then-boyfriend Mick Jagger on July 8, 1969. Having long battled drug addiction, the singer ingested a lethal dose of barbiturates and slipped into a coma.

Work on the film continued while Faithfull was in the coma and she was eventually replaced in the cast. According to songfacts.com, the first thing she said to friends after waking was: “wild horses couldn’t drag me away.” Jagger later denied that Faithfull inspired the famed Rolling Stones song with the same lyrics.

In her autobiography, Faithfull said that she had no conception of the impact her death may have on those around her:

“I had no idea of the pain people go through when somebody commits suicide. I had never even thought about it. And I'd tried the same thing myself. Twice,” he explained.
