1969 - Sharon Tate Murders
1969 - Sharon Tate Murders

In part as a result of a gross misinterpretation of such Beatles songs as "Helter Skelter," a group led by Charles Manson carried out the murders of actress Sharon Tate and four other people. The bodies were discovered on August 9, 1969.

The next day, the Manson cult would kill two others. Manson and his followers were eventually arrested and convicted of the murders.

As for "Helter Skelter," U2 would "steal it back" from Charles Manson on a live cut from their 1988 album "Rattle and Hum." Specifically, lead singer Bono declares on the track: "This is a song Charles Manson stole from the Beatles. We're stealing it back."

Manson had interpreted the song, featured on the Beatles epic White Album, as predicting a racial war, which his murders were an attempt to precipitate. In fact, "Helter Skelter" isn't about much at all. The title lyric refers to a kind of roller coaster, but the song itself was just meant to be a loud, raucus track, as Paul McCartney, the song's principle writer, attempted to out-rock the Who.

Fellow Beatle John Lennon would later say of the song, "It has nothing to do with anything, and least of all to do with me."
