Jay-Z's "Vol. 2 . . . Hard Knock Life" reached number one on October 17, 1998. It was the third studio album from the rapper and featured the hit "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)," which samples from the Broadway musical "Annie."

The LP knocked Lauryn Hill's "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" out of the top spot and reigned for five weeks, before Alanis Morissette's "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie" edged it out for the number one position.

"Hard Knock Life" was Jay-Z's first album to hit number one, starting a trend that has now lasted more than a decade. He has reached the top of the charts with every subsequent studio album. Last year's "The Blueprint 3" marked his 11th album (including a couple collaborations) to reach the top of the Billboard 200; only the Beatles have more number-one records.
