Advanced Semiconductor Q2 Profit Plummets - Update

Friday, Advanced Semiconductor Engineering, Inc. (ASX) reported a sharp decrease in profit for the second quarter, hurt mainly by revenue declines across all the business segments.

For the quarter, the Taipei, Taiwan-based company's net income was NT$1.67 billion or NT$0.32 per share compared with NT$2.41 billion or NT$0.42 per share in the prior-year quarter. On an American Depository Shares basis, earnings slid to US$0.049 per ADS from US$0.070 per ADS a year ago.

The results reflect a 5% increase from fiscal 2008 in depreciation, amortization and rental expenses totaling to NT$4.17 billion.

The company's net revenues for the quarter slumped to NT$20.88 billion from NT$25.61 billion in the second quarter of fiscal 2008.

On a segmental basis, revenues from IC packaging services were NT$16.59 billion as against NT$20.03 billion, revenues from testing services plunged to NT$3.88 billion from NT$5.10 billion, and other revenues were NT$413 million compared to NT$475 million last year.

For the first half of 2009, net profit plummeted to NT$108 million or NT$0.02 per share from NT$4.75 billion or NT$0.83 per share in the comparable period prior year. Earnings were US$0.003 per ADS as against US$0.133 per ADS in the first half of 2008. Net revenues for the half-year period declined to NT$34.28 billion from NT$50.31 billion in the prior year.

ASX closed Thursday's regular trading at $3.47 per share on the New York Stock Exchange.
