Gainers:

Walt Disney Co. (DIS) gained 2 percent to $35.36 as its fourth quarter earnings per share, excluding charges, and revenues were above analysts' estimates. Quarterly profit rose 30 percent from the previous year. Media Networks revenues rose 9 percent, Parks and Resorts revenues increased 11 percent, while Studio Entertainment revenues fell 8 percent.

NVIDIA Corp. (NVDA) gained over 2 percent to $14.80 as its third quarter net earnings more than doubled from the previous year. The company expects fourth quarter revenue to be relatively flat, plus or minus two percent, from the third quarter.

Evolving Systems Inc. (EVOL) rose over 5 percent to $7.15 as its third quarter profit jumped from the previous year. However, revenue declined from the previous year due to lower license and services bookings in the second quarter of 2011. Net loss from continuing operations widened from the year-ago quarter. In addition, the company declared one-time special dividend of $2.00 per share.

Pinnacle Data Systems, Inc. (PNS) surged 100 percent to $2.30 as it agreed to be acquired by Avnet Inc. (AVT) in an all-cash merger for $2.40 per share.

Decliners:

Nordstrom, Inc. (JWN) fell nearly 3 percent to $48.40 as its third quarter net sales, which rose 14.2 percent from the previous year, were below consensus. Earnings per share matched analysts' estimate. Same-store sales increased 7.9 percent. The company raised the lower end of its fiscal 2011 earnings guidance, but were below Wall Street view.

E*TRADE Financial Corp. (ETFC) declined 5 percent to $9.06 as the company announced that it has concluded review of strategic alternatives, and has decided that continued execution of its business plan is currently the best alternative for increasing stockholder value. The company began strategic review, including a possible sale, in early August.

Molycorp, Inc. (MCP) fell 9 percent to $35.30 as its third quarter earnings per share and sales were below Wall Street view. However, the company swung to a profit, and sales surged from the year-ago quarter.

Brooks Automation Inc. (BRKS) declined 5 percent to $9.50 as its fourth quarter profit halved from the previous year. Both earnings and revenues were below consensus.
