NTPC Plans To Invest Rs.8,100 Cr. On Renewable Energy Projects

Power major National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd. or NTPC plans to invest around Rs.8,100 crore to set up over 1,000 MW renewable energy projects by the end of the next Plan period (2012-17), media reports said, quoting sources in the Power Ministry.

This capacity addition will consist of 650 MW of wind energy, 350 MW of hydro energy from units of smaller than 25 MW, and 50 MW of solar energy projects.

The first 100 MW renewable plant based on wind energy is likely to be commissioned by the end of 2010. On an average, generating one MW hydro power costs Rs.7 crore, wind power Rs.8 crore and solar Rs.10 crore.

The company said it had inked an agreement with Karnataka Power Corporation to set up wind energy projects aggregating 500 MW capacity.

On thermal power sector expansion front , NTPC has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Madhya Pradesh Government and MP Power Trading Company for setting up 2,640 MW thermal power plant at Narsinghpur.

NTPC has a total installed capacity of 30,644 MW through 26 power stations, including joint ventures.
