Thursday, British engine maker Rolls-Royce (RR.L) said it won orders worth more than US$ 2.3 billion during the biennial Dubai Air Show from airline operators based in Asia, Middle East, and Africa. The company won orders both in the civil and defense sectors.

Orders in the civil segment included agreements for both the Trent 700 and Trent XWB engines of Rolls-Royce, taking sales for each engine past 1,000. A total of 584 Trent 700 engines have been delivered to customers around the world since it entered into service in 1995, Rolls-Royce said.

The biggest order came from Air China, the state-owned commercial airline in China, for US$ 1.5 billion. The airline selected Rolls-Royce's Trent 700 engine to power 20 Airbus A330 aircrafts as well as signed up for TotalCare engine support service.

Ethiopian Airlines, the national airline of Ethiopia, ordered 12 Trent XWB engines to power its Airbus A350 XWB aircrafts at US$ 480 million. This is the first purchase of a Trent engine by Ethiopian Airlines. Trent XWB is the fastest selling engine in the Trent line, Rolls-Royce said.

DAE Capital selected Rolls-Royce's V2500 engines for 20 Airbus A320 aircrafts for US$ 110 million. DAE Capital is the leasing wing of Dubai Aerospace Enterprise, which is partly funded by Investment Corporation of Dubai, the investment arm of the Government of Dubai.

Etihad Airways, the flag carrier of United Arab Emirates' capital Abu Dhabi, signed up for aftermarket services covering 30 V2500 engines that power 14 Airbus A320 aircrafts for US$ 60 million.

In the defense sector, Rolls-Royce was awarded a US$ 171 million contract by American aircraft engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney to supply its LiftSystem for nine Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing variant F-35 Lightning II aircraft. This order is the second production contract for Rolls-Royce as part of its involvement in the Joint Strike Fighter programme.

During the air show, Rolls-Royce also reaffirmed its commitment in the Middle East by signing a tenancy agreement with the Qatar Science and Technology Park.

RR.L closed Thursday's regular trading at 477.80 pence, down 7.50 pence or 1.55%, on a volume of 1.36 million shares on the London Stock Exchange.
