Health insurer WellCare Health Plans, Inc. (WCG), Monday, announced the election of Alec Cunningham, president of its Florida and Hawaii division, as the company's chief executive officer, effective December 28, 2009. Cunningham succeeds Heath Schiesser who will leave the company at the end of this year.
Having joined Tampa, Florida-based WellCare's executive team in 2005 as vice president of business development, Cunningham initially led teams to secure and implement new Medicaid contracts in Georgia, Ohio and Hawaii. In his recent role as the president of WellCare's largest operating Florida and Hawaii division, he was guiding the whole team serving Medicare and Medicaid members.
Throughout his career at WellCare, Cunningham is said to take a leading role in the company's government affairs and activities. The company noted his government managed care experience will be helpful in his new position as chief executive.
Prior to joining WellCare, Cunningham served commercial health benefits company WellPoint, Inc. (WLP) as vice president of business development and compliance. In this position, he was responsible for developing and managing health care products for state-sponsored programs.
Cunningham also worked with the state of Oklahoma, first on the Governor's staff and then at the Oklahoma Health Care Authority. He participated in the development of the state's Medicaid managed care program in the role.
WCG is currently trading at $38.88, up 5.27%, on the NYSE.
