Metallica's self-titled 1991 album has been named the top seller of the Nielsen SoundScan era. The album has sold more than 15,490,000 copies, putting it at number one on Nielsen's release-to-date chart.

Metallica edged out Shania Twain's Come On Over, which was the previous best-selling album. Come On Over, which was released in 1997, has sold 15,487,000 units to date.

Metallica's self-titled effort was their fifth studio album. It includes the classic songs "Enter Sandman" and "The Unforgiven."

It reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart.

The most recent Metallica album, Death Magnetic, was released last year. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April.

Come On Over remains the top-selling album by a female artist. It spawned 12 singles, including "You're Still The One" and "Man! I Feel Like A Woman."
