Green Day's American Idiot musical will be heading to Broadway this spring, following its critically-acclaimed sold-out run at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California last fall.

According to its producers, the show will open on April 20 at the St. James Theater, with previews starting on March 24. The stage adaptation of the band's Grammy Award-winning album of the same name will be directed by Tony Award-winner Michael Mayer.

American Idiot tells the story of a disaffected suburban youth, featuring songs from the original album and a book by frontman Billie Joe Armstrong and Mayer.

It is not yet known if the California actors, led by John Gallagher Jr., will follow the play to New York. The show will move to the Great White Row just in time to be eligible for the 2010 Tony Awards.
