Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. (BNI) posted fourth quarter net income of $536 million or $1.55 per share, compared to $615 million or $1.78 per share in last year period.
On average, 22 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected the company to report earnings of $1.22 per share. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items.
Results for the quarter included a tax benefit of $0.25 per share related to the fourth-quarter donation of a portion of a line segment located in Washington State.
Total operating revenue for the quarter was $3.7 billion, compared to $4.4 billion in last year quarter. Thirteen Wall Street analysts expected revenues of $3.62 billion.
