Guitarist Joe Perry has told Canada's QMI Agency that the group is close to picking a replacement singer for Steven Tyler, who is currently undergoing rehab for an addiction to painkillers.

About the audition process, Perry said that "the word's been out there for a while" and explained that "as far as auditions go, we'll probably just sit around and have a couple of drinks and see if we get along. Because we're already gonna know that they can sing."

The band is not certain whether Tyler's replacement will be temporary or permanent.

One of the early frontrunners for the position, Lenny Kravitz, has ruled out replacing Tyler, saying that Tyler is a family friend and "no voice could ever take the place of his."

While in rehab, Tyler has indicated that he hoped to "enthusiastically be writing, recording and performing with Aerosmith as soon as things are handled."
