Chattem Inc. (CHTT) Thursday reported fourth quarter net loss of $4.05 million or $0.21 per share, compared with a profit of $16.72 million or $0.86 per share in the prior year. Latest quarter net loss included loss on early extinguishment of debt, employee stock option expense and a non-cash impairment of indefinite-lived intangible assets.
Excluding items, net income for the fourth was $22.5 million, compared to $18.2 million last year. On a per share basis, earnings rose 25.5% to $1.18 from $0.94 in the prior-year quarter.
On average, nine analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected the company to report earnings of $1.06 pe rshare for the quarter. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items.
Fourth quarter revenues were $110.25 million, up 4.5% from $105.46 million in the year-ago quarter. Eight analysts estimated revenues of $109.08 million.
