Russia successfully tested "fifth generation" jet that is invisible to radar and considered as a potential rival to the US F-22 Raptor, reports said.
The Sukhoi T-50 jet, also known by the Russian designation PAK FA, made a 47-minute maiden flight over Komsomolsk-on-Amur in the Far East.
Russia's state-owned news agency Ria-Novosti quoted Olga Kayukova, a spokesperson for the Sukhoi aircraft manufacturer, as saying the plane showed a 'superb performance' meeting "all our expectations for the maiden flight."
The development and test-flight of Russia's first stealth fighter jet is seen as a significant milestone in efforts to modernize its Soviet-era military hardware.
Russia is the second country after the United States to develop a stealth fighter jet.
Senior Russian military officials believe that the warplane will pose a challenge to American military dominance of the skies.
Russian Deputy Defense Minister Vladimir Popovkin said the plane would first be pressed into service in 2015.
Many of the aircraft's capabilities remain secret but officials have described the T-50 as the first Russian fighter equipped with radar-evading stealth technology.
Having the ability to take-off from a strip as short as 300 meters, T-50 has a range of up to 5,500 kilometers and capacity for sustained supersonic flight.
