Casey Johnson's death has been ruled a natural death due to diabetes-related complications.
The Los Angeles County coroner's office said Thursday that the 30-year-old heiress to the Johnson & Johnson empire and daughter of New York Jets owner Woody Johnson died from diabetic ketoacidosis.
The socialite had suffered from diabetes since childhood.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the condition that killed Johnson is a complication of diabetes that occurs when the body cannot use glucose due to inadequate insulin, and therefore uses fat instead. As the fat is broken down, acids called ketones build up in the blood and urine to poisonous levels.
After dying suddenly on January 5, Johnson left behind her three-year-old adopted daughter, Ava, who will live with Johnson's mother, Sale, and her husband, Ahmad Rashad.
