Anglo American plc (AAL.L) said it has undertaken to subscribe in full to its entitlement to the rights offer announced by its unit, Anglo Platinum. The company expects to raise gross proceeds of about ZAR12.5 billion or about $1.6 billion through the rights offer and Anglo American would take up its rights in full associated with its 79.72% shareholding in Anglo Platinum, equivalent to around ZAR10 billion or about $1.3 billion.
Also, Anglo American has agreed to underwrite the minority portion of the rights offer. The rights offer proceeds would be used by Anglo Platinum to repay debt, including intercompany debt between Anglo American and Anglo Platinum.
Seperately, the company announced that it would report underlying earnings in respect of Platinum of $44 million for the year ended 31 December 2009, taking into account certain adjustments.
