Australian And New Zealand Dollars Advance Against Majors

Tuesday in Asia, the currencies of Australia and New Zealand gained against their major counterparts despite a slide in regional stocks.

Australia's benchmark All Ordinaries index lost 18 poinst or 0.40% to close at 4,520 while the S&P index dropped 16 points or 0.36% and closed at 4,505.

New Zealand's NZX 50 index slipped 17 points or 0.55% and now closed at 3,076.

At 2:30 am ET, the Australian dollar rose to a 4-day high of 0.9319 and 0.8720 versus the currencies of Canada and the U.S., respectively. The current quote for the aussie-loonie and the aussie-greenback pairs are 0.9323 and 0.8725, respectively.

At Monday's New York session close, the aussie was worth 0.9316 against the loonie and 0.8644 against the greenback.

The Australian dollar rose to a 5-day high of 78.19 against the yen at 2:40 am ET. As of now, the aussie is worth 78.09 versus the yen. This level may be compared to previous day's close of 77.15.

The Australian curency showed an uptremd agains the euro. At 2:50 am ET, the aussie touched a high of 1.5752. Presently, the aussie is trading at 1.5760 versus the euro. The euro-aussie pair was worth 1.5799 at Monday's New York session close.

The Australian dollar declined to 1.2640 versus its New Zealand rival. At 3:00 am ET, the aussie was quoted at 1.2647 versus the kiwi. The aussie-kiwi pair closed Monday's New York session at 1.2670.

At 12:35 am ET Tuesday, the New Zealand currency touched a high of 1.9905 versus the euro and then traded in a tight range. Presently, the euro-kiwi pair is trading at 1.9934, compared to previous day's close of 2.0005.

The New Zealand dollar rose to 61.89 against the yen at 2:30 am ET. The current quote for the kiwi-yen pair is 61.74 and the pair was worth 60.84 at Monday's New York session close.

Against the greenback, the New Zealand dollar hit a high of 0.6907 at 2:45 am ET. As of now, the kiwi is worth 0.6890 against the greenback. The greeback-kiwi pair closed Monday's New York session at 0.6830.

In the North American session, the U.S. wholesale inventories report for December is scheduled for release.
