Nigerian gunmen have released a South African sound engineer they kidnapped in the restive Niger Delta oil region a week ago, reports said.
Nick Greyling from South African TV channel M-Net, was kidnapped on March 1 along with his two Nigerian colleagues after gunmen ambushed a bus carrying them to the airport in Owerri, capital of Imo State that lies on the edge of the Niger Delta.
They were returning after covering a football match in the nearby city of Enugu for the SuperSport satellite channel.
One of the Nigerians, cameraman Alexander Effiong, escaped a day after the abduction. The fate of the other man is not known.
Caroline Creasy, head of corporate affairs for Multichoice, the parent company of M-Net, confirmed that Greyling was released late on Monday.
She added that she is awaiting details of his return.
Nomfanelo Kota from South Africa's international relations department thanked the South African authorities in Nigeria and Nigerian police for negotiating Greyling's release.
Unconfirmed reports say a ransom of $100,000 was paid for his freedom.
The militants, who demand that a part of the major African petroleum producing country's oil fortunes be shared among them and the impoverished local people, have been frequently attacking oil installations and kidnapping expatriate workers in the southern region for ransom, which saw its output slashed by a third.
The country's oil-rich Delta has been relatively calm since most major militant groups abide by ceasefire agreement with the government in return for amnesty to militants.
