Hamburger restaurant chain White Castle Frozen Food Division recalled certain frozen hamburger products citing the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenesis, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced.

The recall involves frozen Cheeseburger and hamburger sliders sold in select grocery outlets with best by dates ranging from August 4, 2020 to August 17, 2020. These include a limited number of frozen 6 pack cheeseburgers, frozen 6 pack hamburgers, frozen 6 pack jalapeno cheeseburgers, 16 pack hamburgers, and 16 pack cheeseburgers.

The recall was initiated after a recent sample conducted by a third party laboratory of its frozen sandwiches from one manufacturing facility showed a presence of Listeria, a deadly bacteria. White Castle said all impacted production runs have been identified for destruction, and that it has not shipped any product from this facility since the problem was identified.

Listeria, a deadly bacteria, can cause listeriosis, a serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or CDC, 1,600 people develop listeria and about 260 of them die in each year.

Public health officials have not reported any illness related to the recalled products to date. The company urged customers with these items not to eat them and to throw them away immediately.

The Listeria concern has led to many companies recalling their products in recent times. In early December, Fuji Food Products, Inc. recalled ready to eat sushi, salads and spring rolls.

Earlier, Ezzo Sausage Co. also recalled around 25 thousand pounds of sausage products and Mann Packing Co., Inc. recalled a series of vegetable products. North Bay Produce, Inc. in late October recalled 2,297 cases and 2 bulk bins of different varieties of fresh apples.
