Thursday, Wisconsin Power and Light Co., a unit of Alliant Energy Corp. (LNT), announced a proposal to reduce its generation fleet's greenhouse gas emissions primarily retiring its aging coal plant. The company also proposes to build more wind power facilities, double its biomass commitment, and take steps to increase efforts at efficiently managing energy to reduce carbon 'footprint'.

The company would also focus on developing new wind power resources, having previously announced plans for approximately 300 megawatts of new wind by the end of 2010.

As part of its greenhouse gas emissions reduction proposal, WPL said it would also double the amount of renewable resource fuels to be used at the new third unit of Nelson Dewey, to 20%. The company said it is aggressively building upon its energy efficiency measures, when its proposed expansion at the Nelson Dewey Generating Station becomes operable in 2013.

Wisconsin Power expects capital costs of $500 million to $550 million related to these changes in its generation fleet.

LNT closed Thursday's regular trading session at $37.03, down 18 cents. In the after-hours, the shares gained 6 cents.
