Roche Holding AG (RHHBY.PK) has reportedly reduced the price of its lung cancer drug Tarceva for the National Health Service of the UK. With this, Tarceva can now be used as an alternative to Sanofi-Aventis SA's Taxotere for patients who have unsuccessfully tried one chemotherapy regime.

The revised price for a 125-day course of treatment with Tarceva is GBP 6,128 or about $9,265. The previous price was GBP 6,800.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, called NICE, said Tarceva can be used only if its overall treatment costs did not exceed those of Taxotere. Treatment costs can include administration by health professionals, treatment for side effects and patient monitoring.

It is expected that since Tarceva is administered in the tablet form, patients receiving treatment may need less time in the hospital. However, NICE did not recommend Tarceva as a second-choice treatment for advanced or spreading non-small cell lung cancer in patients who could not tolerate Taxotere.

RHHBY.PK closed Tuesday's regular trade at $68.50, up $1.04 or 1.54%, on 1.55 million shares.
