The Arab League has recognized the rebel National Transitional Council (NTC) as the legitimate representative of the Libyan people.

Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi said on Thursday that NTC would take the North African country's seat in the pan-Arab organization.

"It is about time Libya regained its seat in the Arab League," he told reporters in Cairo.

The organization of Arab nations suspended Libya in February in protest against bloody violence unleashed by forces loyal to Col Moammer Qadhafi on anti-government protesters.

Abdel Monem al-Houni, the rebel council's envoy to the Arab League, said that a weekend meeting of foreign ministers of the League member states will discuss readmitting Libya as a member.

Arab League had supported UN Security Council resolution in March that empowered NATO to enforce a no-fly-zone over Libya and other necessary measures to protect civilians from attacks by Qadhafi's regime.
