Asparagus could be the new miracle cure for those pesky holiday hangovers, says a new study from researchers at Jeju National University in South Korea. According to the study, the vegetable's amino acids and vitamins could replace those lost through drinking and also help protect the liver.
"Cellular toxicities were significantly alleviated in response to treatment with the extracts of asparagus leaves and shoots," lead researcher B.Y. Kim said in a statement. "These results provide evidence of how the biological functions of asparagus can help alleviate alcohol hangover and protect liver cells."
The researchers add, however, that to get the greatest benefit from asparagus the plants should be served whole with the leaves. Their data was published in the Journal of Food Science.
