Malaysia's Exports Rise 3.5% In January

Malaysia's merchandise exports increased 3.5 percent on an annual basis to MYR56.99 billion in January, data released by the Department of Statistics showed Monday.

Shipments of manufactured goods increased by 6.7 percent annually, due mainly to higher exports of electrical and electronic products, chemicals and chemical products, parts and accessories of motor vehicles as well as optical and scientific equipment.

Exports of mining goods rose 4.9 percent from a year earlier, helped mainly by a 35.4 percent growth in dispatches of refined petroleum products.

The Peoples Republic of China was the largest single export market in January, with an 8.6 percent growth in shipments compared to last year. Exports to the United States of America increased 8.6 percent, while shipments of Japan decreased 14.1 percent. There was a 5.7 percent annual decrease in exports to the the European Union during the month.

The value of imports advanced 16 percent year-on-year to MYR53.72 billion during the month, the agency said.
