US Delays Missile Test Amid Mounting Tensions With North Korea

The Pentagon has postponed an intercontinental ballistic missile test, scheduled to to held next week, over concerns that it could send a wrong signal to North Korea, which has issued strong threats to the U.S after the United Nations slapped fresh sanctions on the Pacific nation last month for conducting a controversial nuclear test, media reports said Saturday.

The long-planned missile test, which is not part of the ongoing U.S.-South Korea military exercises, has reportedly been delayed until sometime next month.

Tensions have been high in the Korean Peninsula ever since Pyongyang ordered its strategic missile and artillery units to target US military bases in Guam and Hawaii in the Pacific, as well as mainland America and South Korea. The North Korean military said the move was in response to joint military drills being held by the US and South Korea.

In response to North Korea's missile threat, Pentagon announced the deployment of an advanced missile-defense system to the Pacific island of Guam.

There was an escalation of tension after North Korea authorized its army last week to launch nuclear strikes against the United States, and moved a missile to its east coast. South Korea responded by deploying two warships with missile defense systems on the country's east and west coasts.

The developments come after the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) slapped fresh sanctions on North Korea last month to punish it for its recent nuclear test.
