U.S. New Home Sales Increase Sharply In March, Exceed Estimates

New home sales in the U.S. saw a substantial increase in the month of March, according to a report released by the Commerce Department on Tuesday.

The report said new home sales spiked by 7.4 percent to an annual rate of 682,000 in March after soaring by 8.9 percent to an annual rate of 635,000 in February. Economists had expected new home sales to come in at an annual rate of 668,000.

The sharp increase in new home sales partly reflected strength in the Northeast, where new home sales skyrocketed by 80.0 percent to an annual rate of 27,000.

The Federal Reserve policy session was in focus as it was the first to be led by the new chief Kevin Warsh. In Europe, central banks of the U.K. and Switzerland announced their rate decisions. In Asia, the Bank of Japan drew attention for its policy moves, while data out of China threw some light on the state of the economy.
