Syriac Orthodox Archbishop Yohanna Ibrahim and Greek Orthodox Archbishop Boulos Yazigi have been released one day after being kidnapped in Syria, according to BBC News. The two bishops have not been located but there are reports that the two have been returned to their homes.
A spokesperson for the church told Reuters that "the two are on their way to the patriarchy in Aleppo."
It is still not clear who kidnapped the men. The Syrian state news agency SANA blamed rebels, while the rebels blamed the Assad regime.
Ibrahim had previously publicly condemned the violence, perhaps making him a target of the regime. In any case, the pair are the most senior church figures caught up in the fight
The UN estimates that 70,000 people have been killed in Syria's civil war, while a million more have been displaced.
