At least one UN peacekeeper was killed and two others wounded in shelling on a United Nations logistics base in Sudan's South Kordofan State on Friday, a UN spokesperson said.

"Two shells hit the base, killing one United Nations peacekeeper from Ethiopia and injuring two others," said Kieran Dwyer, the head of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) Public Affairs Section.

The base in the South Kordofan State serves as a logistics base for the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), an oil-rich area contested by South Sudan and Sudan.

Condemning the shelling in "the strongest terms," Dwyer called on the Governments of Sudan and South Sudan to immediately cease hostilities and resume ceasefire negotiations.

DPKO has extended its condolences to the family of the deceased and the Government of Ethiopia, and wished the injured colleagues a speedy recovery.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is expected to address the media later in the day on a series of issues, including the incident, the UN said in a press release.
