The conflict in Syria has left more than 100,000 people dead since it began in March 2011, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The London-based rights watchdog said in a statement on Wednesday that the toll was now 100,191 people with civilians accounting for 36,661.

It put government troops killed at more than 25,000 and rebel fighters at 18,072. The rest were pro-regime militiamen, unidentified victims and Hezbollah fighters from neighboring Lebanon, said the statement carried by the Arab media.

The group compiled the figures relying on a network of activists, doctors and lawyers on the ground in that Arab country. The figures could not be independently verified as foreign media have been banned from reporting from the war-torn country.

The Syrian unrest, which began with peaceful demonstrations calling President Bashar al-Assad to step down, turned violent subsequently after crackdowns by security forces on protesters and the rebels, mainly army deserters, retaliating with fire arms. More than two million people have been displaced in the conflict, with Syrian refugees flooding neighboring Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon.

A solution to the conflict eluded as the U.N. Security Council is deeply divided with Russia and China supporting the regime of Assad and the Western countries insisting his exit from power.
