Those who regularly use cocaine and marijuana may be at an increased risk to form other addictive habits, according to a new study from researchers at Holland's Maastricht University.
Researchers examined 61 otherwise healthy users of both drugs as they used the substances in controlled conditions. After using the drugs, the participants were asked to complete tasks in which they were asked to reflect on choices before making a decision.
The researchers found that both drugs caused users to make impulsive decisions despite the moment of reflection.
"If a person's tendency to be impulsive increases, they tend to make snap decisions and the error rate increases," said lead researcher Janelle van Wel from Maastricht University. "This increased impulsivity after drug use could increase the likelihood of developing addiction."
