Time magazine unveiled the top ten finalists for "Person of the Year" in 2013 on Monday, providing a list that includes a wide variety of individuals that made headlines in the past year.
The list includes world leaders such as U.S. President Barack Obama, Syrian President Bashar Assad, and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.
Obama was named "Person of the Year" in both 2008 and 2012, although President Franklin D. Roosevelt is thus far the only person to receive the title three times.
NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden was also named as a finalist after leaking details about the U.S. government's controversial domestic surveillance programs.
The list also includes Pope Francis, who took over as leader of the Catholic Church after Pope Benedict abdicated in March and has made headlines for his efforts to draw attention to income inequality.
Pop star Miley Cyrus, Senator Ted Cruz, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, and gay rights activist Edith Windsor round out the list of finalists.
Time noted that the title of "Person of the Year" goes to the person who the magazine's editors determine most influenced the news, for good or bad. The winner will be announced Wednesday morning.
