Air Berlin PLC, Germany's second largest airline, said Wednesday that its first quarter net loss widened from last year, as revenue declined due to the shift of Easter business to April.

The Berlin-based airline said net loss for the first quarter was €209.8 million or €1.80 per share, compared to a net loss of €196.3 million or €1.68 per share for the year-ago quarter.

Revenue for the first quarter fell 3.8% to €761.8 million from €791.9 million in the same quarter last year.

However, operating loss for the first quarter narrowed slightly to €182.8 million from €188.4 million in the prior year quarter.

Air Berlin shares closed Wednesday on Frankfurt's Xetra down 0.61% at €1.62.
