A relatively obscure diet plan aimed at fighting high blood pressure has been named Best Overall Diet of 2015 by U.S. News and World Report.
The DASH Diet simply asks people to load up on whole grains, veggies and lean meats while giving up high calorie sweets and red meat.
After being evaluated and ranked with input from a panel of health experts, the DASH Diet beat out a field of better-known diets.
"DASH was developed to fight high blood pressure, not as an all-purpose diet. But it certainly looked like an all-star to our panel of experts, who gave it high marks for its nutritional completeness, safety, ability to prevent or control diabetes, and role in supporting heart health," the report said.
"While it may be difficult to give up your favorite fatty, sugary and salty fare, DASH doesn't restrict entire food groups, upping your chances of sticking with it long-term."
The National Institutes of Health's Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes, or TLC, was ranked second, with researchers noting its particularly good at promoting cardiovascular health.
The well-balanced Mayo Clinic diet came in third, tied by the increasingly popular Mediterranean diet.
Weight Watchers was also tied for third, beating out all other commercial diet programs.
The report described Weight Watchers as a "smart, effective diet," with an emphasis on group support, lots of fruits and vegetables, and room for occasional indulgences.
The lowest ranked diets among the 35 evaluated were the Paleo Diet, designed to emulate the meat-rich, low-carb diet of our distant ancestors, and the Dukan Diet, a rule-heavy plan that calls for limitless quantities of lean beef, pork, turkey and chicken in the early stages.
